In March 2002, a provincial forum with more than 150 stakeholders demonstrated Alberta's readiness and commitment to initiate a province-wide, integrated approach to health promotion and chronic disease prevention. As a result, the Alberta Healthy Living Network (AHLN), an inter-sectoral coalition of government agencies, non-governmental organizations, community groups, universities, regional health authorities and professional associations, was created to provide a provincial organizational structure that would coordinate and support integrated, preventive action on the risk factors of nutrition, physical activity and tobacco and on their underlying determinants of health. The activities of the AHLN will be focused on developing a framework for integrated action, supporting the development of healthy public policy, establishing consistent and accurate public messaging for healthy living, and identifying opportunities for professional education and capacity building.
