Ontario Services For Children - Do They Promote Mental Health?"

Paper prepared by the Child Mental Health Committee of the Canadian Mental Health Association - Ontario Division in June 1997.

This document is a focused advocacy statement concerning current programs for children in Ontario, and the need for placing funding priorities on addressing problems in the lives of children at an age as

young as possible. In 24 pages, the paper covers 4 principles of putting a value on children; the cost of not being preventive; the current situation; children at risk and the prevalence of problems and a comprehensive overview of national and international initiatives. It concludes that early prevention programs and treatment programs for children with mental health problems are effective. The appendices include a useful table of the economic impact of varying levels of efficacy of treatment.
