Location: Sioux Lookout, Ontario
As part of the Approaches to Community Wellbeing’s Preventing Infectious Diseases team, the Outreach Worker will provide support to community-based programs in the 33 First Nations communities served by SLFNHA that support and provide education to people who are at risk of acquiring, living with, or affected by infectious diseases. The Outreach Worker will support the development of harm reduction programs within communities (including needle distribution services and opioid overdose prevention programs) and peer support networks, and provide education around harm reduction and STBBIs. Whenever possible, the Outreach Worker will provide education directly to individuals at risk of acquiring, living with, or affected by infectious diseases.
- Minimum Grade 12 or GED
- Diploma in a health related field is an asset
- Valid driver’s license is required
- Previous experience in harm reduction and/or public health (Needle distribution, naloxone, Hepatitis C, HIV, etc.) is required
- Experience with peer network models of education and harm reduction is an asset
- Understanding of the unique determinants of health for First Nations in northwestern Ontario, and the health landscape in which they seek services
- Active interest in harm reduction as it pertains to individuals who use substances
- Excellent planning, organization, time management, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Professional integrity and the ability to maintain confidentiality is essential;
- Experience working both independently and in a team-orientated, collaborative environment is essential
- Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment;
- Ability to develop and maintain respectful/cooperative relationships with First Nations people, communities, service stakeholders, and health care providers to promote an integrated seamless delivery of service
- Excellent written, verbal, and computer skills
- Ability to complete reports and documentation
- Experience and training in cultural competency with First Nations
- Must be willing to travel
- Ability to speak in one of the First Nations dialects in the Sioux Lookout area is an asset
Roles and Responsibilities
- Be familiar with best practices for outreach/ peer support programs, harm reduction programs, and the prevention and testing for sexually transmitted and bloodborne infections (STBBIs)
- Support the Preventing Infectious Diseases team in their development of program guidelines and policies/procedures for harm reduction programs to ensure they are culturally appropriate and consistent with the realities faced within the community
- Outreach to communities to promote harm reduction, and encourage participation in programming and the development of community-based harm reduction services
- Support communities in the development and implementation of harm reduction programs including needle distribution services, opioid overdose prevention programs, and peer support networks
- Support community programs in the recruitment and retention of peer support workers
- Promote and facilitate the utilization of peer support workers in communities
- Work with the Preventing Infectious Diseases team to develop and deliver training modules for community-based workers on how to establish harm reduction programming
- Develop and deliver training modules for community-based workers on harm reduction and infectious diseases
- Work with the Preventing Infectious Diseases team to develop and deliver health promotion presentations, activities, and teachings for individuals who are at risk of acquiring, living with, or affected by sexually transmitted and bloodborne infections (STBBIs)
- Provide ongoing support, training, mentorship, and debriefing to community-based workers and peer workers
- Work with the Preventing Infectious Diseases team to develop and distribute health promotion materials that can be used by community-based workers and peer workers in teachings around harm reduction, STTBBIs, and other infectious disease concerns
- All other duties as assigned
