The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit has an opening for a permanent 1.0 FTE Public Health Inspector based out of its Environmental Health Department in Haliburton, Ontario.

Position Summary:

As a member of the Environmental Health Department (EH), the Public Health Inspector is accountable to EH Management for the implementation of the assigned Requirements of the Environmental Health Program Standards of the OPHS, or Ontario Public Health Standards (http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/pro/programs/publichealth/oph_standards/d...), and related legislation and protocols (http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/pro/programs/publichealth/oph_standards/o...). These include, but are not limited, to the:

  • Health Protection and Promotion Act and all applicable regulations
  • Healthy Menu Choices Act and the applicable regulation
  • Safe Drinking Water Act
  • Beach Management Protocol
  • Drinking Water Protocol
  • Food Safety Protocol
  • Identification, Investigation and Management of Health Hazards Protocol
  • Infection Prevention and Control in Personal Services Settings Protocol
  • Infectious Diseases Protocol
  • Public Health Emergency Preparedness Protocol
  • Rabies Prevention and Control Protocol
  • Recreational Water Protocol
  • Risk Assessment and Inspection of Facilities Protocol
  • and other duties as assigned by EH Management.

Areas of emphasis include Food Safety, Safe Water, Health Hazard Prevention and Management, Personal Services Settings, and Rabies Prevention and Control.

The Public Health Inspector is expected to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team to apply, adapt, choose and/or recommend changes to established methods or procedures and/or to develop new procedures to complete assigned work.

The position involves travel and variations of the working day.

The successful candidate will have:

1.    Education

  • Requirements for employment as a Public Health Inspector as per Section 64 and Regulation 566 of the Health Protection and Promotion Act
  • University degree in Environmental Health

2.    Experience

  • Review and understanding of engineering reports and procedures is preferred
  • Community/public health and/or health promotion experience is preferred

3.    Other

  • Proficiency in the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for the role of Public Health, Front Line Provider as defined by the Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada (http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/php-psp/ccph-cesp/stmts-enon-eng.php)
  • Working knowledge of the OPHS
  • Individuals granted certification by the Board of Certification (BOC) after January 1, 2017, will be required to maintain a regular membership with CIPHI and participate in the Continuing Professional Competencies (CPC) program
  • Valid Driver’s License and access to a vehicle
  • Current and satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Search
  • Proof of immunizations required by HKPRDHU
  • Satisfactory completion of probationary period (6 months)

Location:  Haliburton, Ontario

Salary Range:  $74,540-$81,823 (CUPE 2017 Pay Grid 10)

Start Date:  As Soon as Possible
