Cancer Control Policy and Information, National Office (Toronto)

Position Title: Epidemiologist - 2 year contract
Reports To:  Director, Cancer Control Policy & Information      

A highly skilled, experienced, and dynamic epidemiologist is required for this full time position based in Toronto, Ontario.  As a member of the Cancer Control Policy team, the incumbent will be responsible for analysis and interpretation of data around complex issues to assist in the development of evidence-based health policy for the national office of the Canadian Cancer Society and National Cancer Institute of Canada and for adding value to the priorities of the divisions of the Canadian Cancer Society and to other departments of the national office

Primary Duties

  • Critically evaluate individual research studies and bodies of scientific research to draw conclusions and synthesize the results of this research in briefing notes, position statements, and information materials.
  • Provide expertise in the development of scientific agendas for national conferences on complex cancer control issues
  • Review selected CCS cancer information material for scientific accuracy
  • Develop background papers about cancer control issues and liaise with national or international organizations, where appropriate.
  • Provide in-house education/training opportunities for national, divisional and Cancer Information Service staff.
  • Provide in-house epidemiologic staff expertise to enhance support for the Steering Committee for Canadian Cancer Statistics and other committees of the NCIC and CCS national office, as required.
  • Contribute to the development of the Cancer Control Policy plan to expand the reach, breadth and depth of NCIC and CCS national policy work.

  • Willingness to travel within Canada (10-15 days per year) and very occasionally outside of Canada (1-2 times per year maximum)
  • Experience working with volunteers and multi-disciplinary teams

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in epidemiology. Candidates with expertise in cancer epidemiology at PhD level preferred.  Candidates with an acceptable level of education and practical experience are encouraged to apply.
  • 5-7 years of ongoing professional development in the analysis of health-related research, particularly in conducting meta-analyses and critically evaluating scientific evidence.  Knowledge of cancer control spectrum and science.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy with proficiency in Internet Explorer, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Outlook. Familiarity with online searchable cancer databases, including the International Agency for Research on Cancer carcinogenicity database, and the National Library of Medicine PubMed database
  • Non-smoker.
