Investigating the Student Potential For Providing Dental Services In Community Settings

Many dental institutions have successfully incorporated community-oriented programs into their curriculum. The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential for the clinical placements of dental and dental hygiene students in the province of Ontario in community-based settings. The results indicate that there is strong support for the placement of students in community-based clinics because of the valuable experience such placements would provide for students and because of the high level of unmet dental needs in the underprivileged populations that many of these organizations serve. The drawbacks were the costs of the placements to each organization in terms of finance and time and patient selection difficulties.
