Position Summary

The Research and Policy Analyst promotes effective, evidence-informed public health practice at Algoma Public Health (APH) through the analysis and synthesis of research, the advancement of healthy public policy, and the provision of strategic support to health unit teams.  As part of the Foundations and Strategic Support Team, the Research and Policy Analyst will build capacity in the development, implementation and evaluation of evidence-informed public health interventions, which improve population health outcomes and advance health equity.
Roles and Responsibilities

  • Apply advanced knowledge of population health, determinants of health, and evidence-informed decision making to support the work of local public health
  • Collaborate with Epidemiologist and Planning and Evaluation Specialist as part of a team that supports program planning and evaluation, knowledge exchange, and quality and transparency
  • Work in a self-directed manner in a consultant role to support health unit teams in program planning and evidence-informed decision making
  • Conduct and/or lead a research evidence rapid review process
  • Synthesize complex information into appropriate communication products, such as evidence reviews, briefing notes, policy positions, and presentations
  • Monitor, identify, analyze and provide strategic recommendations on trends, risks and opportunities, with respect to the advancement of healthy public policy
  • Develop collaborative and strategic relationships with internal and external partners to enhance evidence-informed public health practice and advance healthy public policy
  • Support education and training opportunities for staff and/or students

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills for this position include (but not limited to):

  • Master's degree in public health, health policy, health promotion, health science, epidemiology, social sciences or related discipline and/or combined relevant experience
  • 2 to 5 years’ experience working in a public health setting, preferably in Ontario
  • Strong knowledge in quantitative and qualitative research methods and an understanding and appreciation of healthy public policy and the policy process
  • Experience in conducting rapid reviews of the literature, including literature search, environmental scan, critical appraisal, and evidence synthesis
  • Experience in preparing and delivering high quality written reports and presentations for diverse audiences and purposes
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a self-directed, and highly responsive manner, to establish priorities and balance multiple projects
  • Competence in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, as well as reference management software
  • Must be reliable and have a good attendance record
  • Ability to work outside regular business hours, including weekends and evenings, as required
  • Requires a valid “G” Ontario Driver’s Licence and use of a reliable vehicle
  • A current Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) with satisfactory clearance is a condition of employment, at own expense
