The Loka Institute has an opening for one full-time, paid student intern (or a full-time work-study student) for the summer of 1997 (and beyond). We also have several openings for volunteer interns. The Loka Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to making science and technology more responsive to democratically decided social and environmental concerns.
A principal task for the paid intern will be to assist us in preparing a set of comparative case studies of U.S. programs that conduct research collaboratively with grassroots, public-interest, and worker organizations. Applicants for this position should be comfortable reading and analysing written materials, conducting phone interviews, and synthesizing diverse materials into lucid and engaging written reports. These case studies will become part of a "tool kit" we are preparing to help people who are interested in strengthening existing community-based research programs or in launching new ones.
Self-motivation, a high level of personal responsibility (i.e., the ability to start a task and see it through to completion), and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently are all vital skills for this internship. If you are interested in working with us, please send a hard copy resume along with a succinct letter explaining your interest to: The Loka Institute, P.O. Box 355, Amherst, MA 01004, USA.
