Reporting to the Acting Manager, Healthy Living/Disease Prevention, Planning & Policy, the Consultant Nutrition Promotion focuses on the review, synthesis and analysis of relevant literature in the development of recommendations for food and nutrition-related policy and advocacy.
- Provides advice and consultation to Toronto Public Health management and staff, the Board of Health, external groups, community professionals, community leaders, the general public and the media on food and nutrition issues.
- Provides public health nutrition services to Toronto Public Health staff and the public.
- Assesses community needs and analyzes information related to food and nutrition issues.
- Collaborates with Public Health program staff in strategic and operational planning for the development of nutrition related programs and services.
- Reviews and analyzes information and research related to nutrition programs, projects and new or emerging issues in food and nutrition areas for determining divisional and program specific goals and objectives.
- Drafts and revises program plans, policies and procedures.
- Applies health promotion strategies including community mobilization, advocacy, healthy public policy, health education and skill building, environmental support and social marketing to plan, implement and evaluate community based nutrition program initiatives.
- Coordinates the development, implementation and evaluation of divisional and city. programs and projects related to nutrition, child health and chronic diseases.
- Promotes the implementation of nutrition related municipal, provincial and federal legislation and strategies.
- Develops policy recommendations, e.g. legislation or policies on issues related to food and nutrition for consideration by the appropriate divisional group or external group.
- Delivers presentations, conducts speaking engagements for the public, community and media. Answers questions from the public related to nutrition.
- Liaises and consults with interested external groups as appropriate.
- Plans, develops, implements, coordinates and evaluates nutrition programs and services as directed (e.g. community forums, workshops, press conferences, in-house newsletters, media campaigns, Annual Reports, press releases).
- Liaises and works with internal and external committees, task forces, organizations and coalitions which are essential for the development, implementation and evaluation of nutrition related and chronic disease prevention health programs and services.
- Participates in the planning and delivery of orientation and continuing education for staff and community professionals and the mentoring and training of students. Drafts, revises and/or recommends teaching manuals and resource materials for the public and divisional staff.
- Researches, prepares and presents reports, position papers, funding proposals, journal articles and correspondence for the division.
- Participates in applied nutrition research and field studies and epidemiological studies with a nutritional component.
- A Master's degree from a recognized university with a major in community and/or public health nutrition or the equivalent as per the Health Protection & Promotion Act, Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.
- Bachelor's degree with major credits in Foods and Nutrition from a university offering a Dietitians of Canada (DC) Accredited Dietetic Education Program or equivalent. education plus successful completion of supervised practical experience, as acceptable to DC.
- Membership with the College of Dietitians of Ontario is required.
- Demonstrated experience working with aboriginal and ethno-cultural communities.
- Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communications skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse community partners.
- Demonstrated analytical, organizational, program planning and evaluation, leadership and facilitation skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, which may include overtime, shift work, evenings and weekends.
